Grip Age™ estimates your biological grip age.
When you add a dynamometer reading, we anchor to population grip-strength norms (NHANES-style) - the same signal used in longevity research. Your hang time then fine-tunes the score.
How we calculate it (v1.16)
- With dynamometer: We find the population age whose median dominant-hand grip matches yours (NIH Toolbox / Wang 2018 peaks, NHANES age-curve shape), then blend most of the score from that bio anchor with a smaller hang-endurance adjust. Labeled Measured when grip strength is entered.
- Without dynamometer: Hang-only estimate, labeled Estimated. We start from your date of birth (chronological age) and sex, then build an expected hang for someone with your bodyweight and height. Heavier athletes are expected to hold a bit less time for the same strength signal; height has a smaller effect. Your hang is scored against that personal bar, not a single flat cutoff for everyone. Grip training experience raises the expected hang bar (Advanced is held to a higher standard than None or Beginner for the same time). Beating your bar pulls Grip Age younger; missing it pulls older, with soft limits so extreme scores stay honest. Add a dynamometer on submit for a measured score.
Grip Age™ is calculated from a standard two-arm dead hang only. Weighted, one-arm, and other specialty hangs do not change it. Leaderboard ranking is always by hang time. Lower Grip Age is better.
