Grip Age methodology · v1.16

Research

How hang time and an optional dynamometer reading become Grip Age. Hang time still ranks the board.

What this page is

Grip Age™ is WDHC's training benchmark. It estimates how your hang compares to adults your age and sex. A lower Grip Age means a younger grip relative to your chronological age. It is not a medical diagnosis and it does not change leaderboard rank. Rank is always hang time.

An optional dynamometer reading (max squeeze) can turn the score from Estimated into Measured. Hang endurance and max grip often agree. When they split, that is a useful signal: endurance specialist vs strength specialist, not a broken formula.

Board snapshot

Open-board counts from the live athlete file on 22 Sep 2026. We will refresh this when the board moves in a meaningful way.

Dynamometer readings are optional on submit. We do not yet have enough paired hang + dynamometer files to publish a calibration table. Hang time still ranks the board.

Three Grip Age readings (v1.16)

Athletes who add a dynamometer get three numbers. The official public score is the Measured blend. Hang-only athletes see Estimated only. Source: js/grip-age.js v1.16.

1 - Hang-Estimated

Hang time only. Expected hang from age, sex, bodyweight, height, and training. Label: Estimated.

2 - Dynamo Bio

Dynamometer only. Inverse lookup against NHANES-shaped adult grip norms (NIH Toolbox / Wang 2018 peaks). Training does not adjust this path.

3 - Measured Blend

Official score when a dynamometer is present: 82% Dynamo Bio + 18% hang modifier, then capped. Label: Measured.

As paired files grow, we will re-fit hang-only coefficients toward Dynamo Bio for typical athletes, and keep large gaps as endurance vs strength flags.

Worked examples (v1.16)

Every row was run through the live Grip Age function. Inputs are listed under the profile. Gap = Hang-Estimated minus Dynamo Bio. Negative gap means the hang looks younger than the squeeze.

Takeaway: When hang and squeeze tell the same story, the three scores sit close. Large gaps mark phenotype splits worth watching. Adult Grip Age floors at 18.

Roadmap

Phase 1 - Paired files

Collect optional dynamometer readings with hang + demographics. Publish a paired N here once it is large enough to be honest. We are not there yet.

Phase 2 - Convergence model

Re-fit hang-only coefficients against Dynamo Bio. Target: median absolute gap under 5 years for general-population profiles.

Phase 3 - Phenotype notes

Separate endurance-biased vs strength-biased athletes. Publish simple normative tables by age, sex, and training.

Contribute

Add a dynamometer reading on submit if you have one. It is optional for rank. It is the only way the Measured path improves.

Grip Age™ is a training benchmark, not a medical diagnosis. See the medical disclaimer. Public science context:

These papers motivate why grip is worth tracking. They do not validate Grip Age as a clinical tool. Hang time still decides board rank.
