What Is Grip Age™?
Grip Age translates your dead hang time into a population-anchored score, how your grip endurance compares to adults your age and sex. A lower Grip Age means your hang outperforms typical expectations for your chronological age. A higher Grip Age means there is room to climb the tiers.
WDHC uses Grip Age™ v1.16 on the public site, emails, and Athlete Portal. Every approved submission receives a Grip Age analysis in your confirmation email. Client and worker formulas stay in lockstep.
How It Works
We start with your chronological age and sex, then compare your hang against population-anchored expectations. Longer hangs pull your Grip Age younger; shorter hangs pull it older relative to the field.
With dynamometer: 82% NHANES dynamo bio age + 18% hang modifier (capped) — same live source as Research and js/grip-age.js v1.16
Hang-only scores use conservative general-population priors until the WDHC registry matures. Optional dynamometer readings sharpen the estimate when you provide them.
Grip Age is a training benchmark, not a judgment. Leaderboard rank is always hang time. In your Athlete Portal settings you can hide Grip Age from the public board anytime while keeping it visible in your private dashboard.
Performance Tiers
Tiers are based on approved hang duration (standard two-arm dead hang for Open board ranking). They are separate from Grip Age but often move together as you improve.
- Challenger - 0 to 59s~80% of adults
- Contender - 1:00 to 1:59top ~20%
- Expert - 2:00 to 2:59top ~5%
- Elite - 3:00 to 3:59top ~1%
- Legend - 4:00 to 4:59top ~0.01%
- Freak - 5:00+top ~0.001%
How to measure your grip strength
Use a hand dynamometer (squeeze gauge) on your dominant hand. Stand relaxed, arm at your side, elbow bent about 90°. Squeeze as hard as you can for 3 to 5 seconds. Take your best of three attempts, in pounds or kilograms.
- No dynamometer? Many climbing gyms and physical therapy offices have one. A cheap digital grip trainer works too.
- Same hand every time. Dominant hand only - do not average both hands.
- Optional for rank. Leaderboard placement is always hang time. Grip strength only sharpens your Grip Age™ when provided.
Add your reading on submit or in your Athlete Portal profile. It is never required, but it can refine your Grip Age when hang data alone is ambiguous.
Try the Grip Age calculatorBefore You Film
- Warm up lightly. Shoulder circles and one or two short hangs, not a full fatigue session before the real attempt.
- Chalk, not tack. Block or liquid chalk is encouraged. No rosin, pine tar, or sticky grip aids.
- Know your path. Unverified: hang from almost anything. Verified: official regulation bar plus a short close-up in the same clip.
- Standard open hang is overhand. Pronated grip, thumbs around or thumbless. Mixed, underhand, and other grips are their own hang types on the form, not the open board.
Camera Setup
- Full body in frame. Hands on bar through feet, entire body visible for the whole clip.
- Side or 45° angle. Reviewers need to see elbow extension and that feet stay off the ground.
- Timer is optional. Film Mode or a clock in frame helps review. If you skip it, we add an official WDHC timer after approval. Still state your time on the form.
- Public or unlisted link. YouTube, Drive, Reddit, Instagram, or TikTok, reviewers must be able to open it without a login wall.
During the Hang
- One continuous take. Film from setup through release with no cuts, speed changes, or edits.
- Active hang. Shoulders engaged, slight lat/scap engagement is fine. Soft elbow bend is fine on the open board. Deep bend is an active hang. No leg cycling.
- Timer starts when feet leave. Hands on bar, feet off ground = start. Timer stops when hands or feet touch down.
- Both hands on the bar. Small grip resets in the same spot are OK. One-handed hangs are not: if a hand clearly leaves the bar to rest or reposition, the hang ends there. Natural shoulder and hip shifts are fine.
- State your time accurately. WDHC allows - 3 seconds tolerance; larger gaps get corrected to the verified video time.
WDHC verified check
Unverified hangs rank you with a continuous clip and full body in frame. Hang from almost anything. Verified needs a regulation bar and bar proof. See the rulebook.
- Bar proof. Diameter on camera (1.25 in / 32 mm) or brand/model for independent check.
- Bar surface close-up. Prove no tape, foam, or tacky coatings. Factory powder coat and light knurling are OK.
- Same unedited clip. Measurement and hang in one continuous video.
- WDHC event exception. At a sanctioned in-person WDHC event you do not need bar proof on the video. Host regulation bar + event verification cover it. Still film full body and clean form. Timer is optional. Details: rulebook.
Top film mistakes we still see: private video links reviewers cannot open - body out of frame - straps or gloves - spliced clips. Fix those and most hangs clear on the first try. Full checklist in the rulebook.
Common Rejections
- Edited or spliced footage
- Body partially out of frame
- Deep elbow bend filed as a dead hang, one-handed hangs, or feet touching ground early
- Straps, gloves, or tacky grip aids
- Private video links reviewers cannot open
- Submitted time far off from verified duration
Climber FAQ
How do I submit from the gym or home?
- Unverified ranks you from almost any hang surface. Verified needs a regulation bar plus a short close-up in the same clip.
- Film one continuous clip - timer optional, full body in frame for every hang (unverified and verified).
- Submit at worlddeadhang.com/submit - upload a phone clip or paste a YouTube/Drive link.
- Get approved - most hangs reviewed within 48 hours. Verified checkmark is optional: it proves true WDHC regulation standard, and is also used for titles, Pro, and some challenges. Open board is fine without it. Sign in with the same name and email as soon as you submit. Only approved hangs hit the public board.
Do I need a dynamometer?
No. Leaderboard rank is always hang time. A grip-strength reading only sharpens your Grip Age™ when you choose to add one.
What counts for monthly challenges?
Every approved hang in the challenge window counts automatically - no separate form. Each month runs Longest Hang of the Month plus a rotating second challenge (see Challenges).
Athlete share kitWDHC vs Rogue / Guinness
WDHC is building a year-round league, not a one-week brand popup or a single record attempt.
- Rogue Cliffhanger - episodic 4-day challenge, entry fee, app submission, prizes for winners. Great for hype; closes when the window ends.
- Guinness World Records - ultimate credibility for one verified number; no community leaderboard or monthly rhythm.
- WDHC - free entry, global persistent board, Grip Age™, monthly challenges, gym local standings, Athlete Portal, and a published rulebook. Verified check hangs can align with strict record standards when you film to WDHC Pro criteria.
